Creative Process

Speaking is probably the third-best way I communicate. Writing is a significant part of my creative process, and I always carry a commonplace book with me. I fill pages with notes, research, material test pages, and reflections before committing to a composition, medium, or subject when developing a specific idea.

Writing allows me to think through concepts, test possibilities, and clarify my intentions. If I cannot write about an idea clearly, I am unlikely to produce an image that satisfies me. Likewise, if I cannot communicate an idea through writing or visual means, I certainly will not be able to speak about it with confidence. For me, writing and image-making is a deeply interconnected practice, each helping to shape and strengthen the other.

Studies

Artistic studies are an important part of my daily practice. I draw every day, usually on scraps of paper and using a variety of mediums. As a portrait/figurative artist, I am constantly seeking a deeper understanding of the relationship between my materials, and the methods I use to render the figure. These studies allow me to experiment freely, refine my visual language, and discover new ways of approaching form, gesture, and representation. They are an essential part of my process, informing the larger and more complex works .
