About

Alex Agecoutay considers herself a storyteller first and a figurative artist second. Her work relies heavily on the observation of others and reimagining the people she encounter in everyday life. Much of this perspective is shaped by her positionality in the world. Growing up with a strong sense of Indigenous pride while being disconnected from community in Calgary often placed her in the role of observer rather than participant. This feeling has surfaced in different ways throughout her life. When first encountering the concept of the flâneur in art history, she felt an immediate kinship with the "aimless wanderer" who moves through the world unnoticed and inconspicuous.

Themes of alter ego, feminism, and power frequently emerge in her work. Living in an urban environment, she seeks to explore and celebrate diversity through the figures she depicts.
